Orinoco April Blog 2015 “If you don’t like your job; your wage is just a bribe”
“Take me to the April sun in Cuba”
Yes that’s right I heard the USA had a cup of tea with Cuba after a trillion years. Maybe that was what the New Zealand/ Australian band Dragon were singing about in the 70’s and 80’s.
Or maybe I just wrote this mindless, irrelevant tripe because the song had April in it, and I needed a way to start the blog.
Oh and April is the month of birthdays for my wife and mother in law…Happppyyy Birrrthday.
So I think it is time to talk about the song Overdue, mainly because I have uploaded three songs on JJJ unearthed and Overdue is in the three. I think I might start with the music side of the song first.
As this song was built around the lyrics…
“Hey you said your were going to talk music first?”
“Yes I am, so please be quiet at the back.”
Anyway as I was saying before I was rudely interrupted, the song was based around the lyrics so I had a couple of goes with the music side of it.
The chords/riff came about while I was just mucking about on Jerry’s acoustic guitar while he was doing something on the mixing desk. Anyway both he and I liked it and I suddenly realised it would fit the Overdue lyrics.
The old chords also worked but it just wasn’t quite right so with a tear and a tissue I had to say goodbye to these friends after using them for two years.
The piano was quite hard work because I am not much of a player but after a month I finally came up with the part that I was happy with. Jerry was a bit skeptical at first but he gave his approval when we put the piano with the guitar.
How come there is no drums?
I am so glad you asked because I know it is must be killing you but your sleepless nights will be a thing of the past once you find out.
Well Beau forgot that I had booked a session, or if you ask him I forgot to remind him. Anyway that is the reason, so sorry if you thought it was going to be an amazing musical decision, no just bad communication.
Now as I said before the lyrics were key to this song because it is about a friend that I played cricket with at school. Lets call him PK, which you will understand a bit later. PK tragically committed suicide by jumping in front of a train, and I also haven’t forgotten how it must of felt for the person driving the train at the time.
PK had been suffering with mental health for a long time and the title Overdue was a comment someone had said when they heard the news, because some close to him were just waiting for it to happen.
This is also why I wrote “Paperclip Survival” because they hold paper temporarily, and like some people you are not sure if they will hold onto the day to day grind we all go through.
If there is some silver lining to this, two of PK’s BFF began a charity which raises funds to buy new equipment for Perth’s Mental Hospital. This is done via the PK Cup which is an annual cricket game played at the school we all went too.
So if you ever see PK Cup on social media than that is what it is all about. There isn’t a website but punch in PK Cup in Facebook and it will come up.
Anyway enough from me.
Stay Safe
